Situation where right-turn signal is red and no No-Turn-on-Red sign.

I drove almost 10 years in my country, South Korea. And here, I have new driving habits that Pittsburghers do and I love it.

First of all, yielding to others, ambulances, of course pedestrians. In intersections, it's not hard to see yielding drivers to who turns left in opposite side. Someone may say it's nonsense and they are stuffy. However, it just take one or two seconds and hey don't make severe delay. It makes feeling good.

Moreover, people go easy when they grab the handle. Drivers do over-speed, but it doesn't seem to be danger. And, I think distance between cars is far enough to stop properly in emergency situation. I know that not few numbers of traffic accidents occur everyday, but it's kind of unavoidable as long as we give up to use the cars.

In my country, driving is like a racing and competition. Yielding habit is usually nonsense, when you drive. When you cut in front of any car, you will hear sounds of klaxon couple of times. Even though you are done successfully, you should get it more and take beams that the driver behind you shoots.

Traffic rules in Korea are similar, but there are some differences, of course. Major one I think is turning rules. I mean left, right and U turn. In South Korea, there isn't 'No Turn On' sign. In there, you can turn right any time. Of course when other cars and pedestrians do not interrupt you. So you don't need to stop, when you make a right.

U-turn, I've never seen the 'U-turn sign' here. Instead, I remember that I've seen the 'no U-turn sign' several times. I am not sure that it's legal to make a U-turn in intersections that don't have 'no U-turn sign'. In Korea, we have lots of 'U-turn' and 'No U-turn' signs. It's somewhat clear.

Left turn is also different. In US (or Pittsburgh?), left turn signals are only seen on the wide load or loads which have much traffic for left turn. We usually make a left when the signal is green and it's safe from cars in opposite side. We say 'turn left at intersection with no left turn signal' or 'turn left at your own risk'. In Korea, intersections usually have the  left-turn signal. So drivers should makes lefts when the left-turn signal is on. In an intersection which doesn't have left-turn signal, you can see 'not-protected' sign for left-turn.

I've driven for three years in Pittsburgh. by the way, I still have a question. Can I make a right in intersections when the right-turn signal is red? There is only a 'right turn signal', no 'No Turn On Red' sign. I am still confusing. In my though, I must not make a right, because the right-turn signal says 'No!". But sometimes, when I stop in the intersection, the driver behind me pushes me 'go right now!'.

Am I wrong?

Why Are You So Shy in the Locker Room

I am not a citizen. I have live here US for three years. I have experience many cultural differences between my country and US for that time. Sometimes I can't understand the differences, but I used to try to do so as the Americans do.

When in Rome, do as the Romans do!

Recently, I starts learning to swim. There are some differences cultures or habits in swimming pool as well. For example, in my country men, even beginners, usually wear deltoid swimming suits as competitors do. But I haven't seen anyone wearing that kind of swimming suit here.

I love Panera Rewards Program

I go to Panera restaurant occasionally to get a cup of coffee and free access of internet. There are enough tables that I can seat any time while using internet.

About three months ago, I got Panera member Card. It's not a credit card, but just a reward card. You can get it any Panera branch just asking it to the clerk. It seemed just normal rewards card, getting points and getting rewards.

Surprisingly, I got 3 rewards, two for free espresso and one free bagel.  I usually order a medium coffee which price is less than two bucks. I guess that the my total spending on there is less than twenty bucks for three months. I am not a regular customer. But I got 3 rewards. It's almost ten bucks value. And I got another bagel today.

It is a great reward program, isn't it? Oh. Nobody pushes me to post about it.

A Little Clever Sea Lion in Pittsburgh Zoo

Last week, I went to Pittsburgh Zoo with my 14 months old daughter. She loves to see sea lions and polar bears who are superstars of the zoo. They are perky in spite of cold weather.

It's feeding time when we arrived at the pond sea lions swam. There was a little one among five sea lions. The keeper threw small fishes to them and the swallowed fishes immediately. By the way, the little kid didn't swallow it, but just held it with his moth. And he swam and climbed the rock in center of the pond. Then, he started to play a show. Throwing, catching, and shaking the fish.

Other sea lions were watching the show and waiting the time he drops the fish. They were still hungry. But, the kid played very well. He seems an experts on that kinds of playing. We really enjoyed it and cheered for him. He was our superstar!

However, even homer sometimes nods!

The little star did drop the fish and it fell into pond. The starving adults moved immediately to get the fish. The little star also dived into the water quickly. Few seconds later...

The little star came back! He climbed the rock in a stately manner. His mouth held the fish again. What a strong! What a clever! Finally he swallowed the fish and the hungry adults just seeing it with envious eyes.

He received an ovation from us, from my daughter. She watched the show from beginning to end, definitely. The show was surprising and the concentration of a 14 months old girl was surprising too.

Have you eve seen such a little clever sea lion?

Borders Pittsburgh Branch is Closed

One of my favorite spot, Borders Shadyside, Pittsburgh, was gone. I really enjoyed it with lots of books, kids play mats, and tasty Seattle's Best Coffee.

All items is on sale 20% to 40%. Book-hunters were using strollers, shopping carts (actually it's form grocery store), and their big bags.

Inside of the book store was mess. The giraffe which usually stands grandly in the kids area saw the disaster with sorrowful eyes.

I wanted to enjoy a last cop of coffee, but I was too late.

I loved the wall next to the cafe in second floor. I will miss it very much.
